The cryptocurrency world is indeed a strange place. In an unprecedented move, hackers returned $100,000 worth of ETC to Gate.io, the exchange said in its official blog post. Last week, hackers had shocked the cryptocurrency community by mounting a 51% attack on Ethereum Classic. The hacker seemed to have return the money within 3 days on January 10th.
The reason for this strange turn of events is still unknown to the exchange. It said:
“If the attacker didn’t run it for profit, he might be a white hacker who wanted to remind people of the risks in blockchain consensus and hashing power security”
Gate.io also added a note of caution stating that the hashing power of the ETC network is still not strong enough to protect it from another attack. According to the exchange, another 51% attack can be easily done by renting extra hashing power. The cryptocurrency exchange, on its part, has increased the number of confirmations to 4000 and launched a strict 51% detect for enhanced protection. It has also requested other exchanges to monitor the situation closely.
